Occasionally patients may experience accommodative spasm, an involuntary strain of the reading muscles in their eye. Near focus spasm can result in rapid eyeglass prescription change, headache, and blur; especially at night.
Near focus spasm often occurs slowly from over-use of the near focusing muscle of the eye, including excessive screen time or prolonged periods of reading. We often treat near focus spasm in our office with anti-fatigue contact lenses and eyeglasses.
Frequent breaks from near work is also recommended. Known as the 20-20 Rule, it is suggested to take a 20 second break after every 20 minutes of screen time.
